Helping the Homeless

Called to Find Homes for the Homeless: Norma Galloway of Honor and Glory

Norma Galloway is and has been many things—a minister, a boxer, an employee of the Department of Homeless Services—but as Executive Vice President of Cohen & Cohen Consulting and founder of Honor and Glory, which began serving homeless veterans and seniors and now works to find housing for all types of individuals and families, Ms. Galloway has shined as a real estate developer able to find homes for those living in shelter.

“One of the things I feel blessed about as a developer is the ability to be a bridge bringing people together,” said Ms. Galloway. “What I do is solve problems. My goal is to be a solution to the problem we have and not set people up to fail. I want to elevate them so they can create stability in their lives.”

She believes strongly in working with clients that are ready to transition to housing, and eventually to financial independence. In 2016, she registered approximately 50 apartment units for families and 75 rooms for single adults, placing over 150 formerly homeless individuals into permanent housing.

To find homes for the homeless, Ms. Galloway works with people like Noel Cohen, founder of Cohen and Cohen Consulting, real estate investors like Moshik Regev and Ari Freidman of Farm Development, along with DHS and shelter providers. She frequently checks in on clients after they are housed, acting as a liaison with landlords to make sure they make a smooth transition to housing. “She sits down and interviews each and every family, assessing which client would be best for which apartment,” said Mr. Cohen. “It’s an honor to work with someone you can trust, and to be able to give back and help people.”

On March 9, 2017, Ms. Galloway helped Ana Corporan, who had been living in shelter with her two daughters, finalize the details of the new apartment she and her family would move into that weekend. “Other brokers made me wait and never gave me an answer,” said Ms. Corporan. “Here I got approved within a day. She helped me so much.” “When I first met [Ms. Corporan], I knew she was ready and I could help her,” said Ms. Galloway. “She was very committed to working.”

Tiffany McKiver of the Department of Homeless Services’ Housing Opportunity Team helped expedite the processing of Ms. Corporan’s housing voucher so she could get housed in time. Ms. Corporan and her two daughters now have their own apartment. Ms. Galloway and her partners in DHS and the real estate community did not rest long—already they were working on housing other families. “The developers I work with take real estate that’s broken down and turn it into something beautiful, I try to do the same thing with people’s lives,” said Ms. Galloway.
